Sci-Lum Journal of Biomedicine is a peer-reviewed, open-access scientific journal dedicated to advancing academic rigor, methodological transparency, and intellectually bold contributions across biomedical and health sciences. As an international platform committed to scholarly integrity, the journal welcomes submissions from both early-career and experienced researchers, particularly those aiming to contribute original, relevant, and ethical research to the global scientific discourse.
The journal’s editorial standards are aligned with the principles set forth by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), and models established by leading open science publishers such as Frontiers, PLOS, and BMJ Open. All submitted manuscripts are subject to thorough ethical and editorial security, including double-blind peer review, originality checks via iThenticate, and professional language evaluation.
Sci-Lum publishes three primary types of manuscripts: Original Research Articles, Review Articles, and Case Reports. Each submission must adhere to specific structural, stylistic, and scientific requirements outlined in the following sections. Authors are expected to prepare manuscripts with clarity, precision, and full compliance with the ethical and technical standards described herein.
Original Research Articles
Original research articles should present new scientific findings that make a significant contribution to their respective field. Submissions in this category must not exceed 5000 words (excluding references, tables, and figure legends) and must follow the IMRaD structure—Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion. Each submission must be accompanied by a structured abstract (250–300 words), divided into the following subsections: Background, Objectives, Methods, Results, and Conclusion. This standardized format ensures logical communication of the research question, its execution, and its outcome. The introduction should define the scientific context of the study, highlight current literature, and clearly identify the knowledge gap being addressed. The final paragraph of the introduction must state the research question or hypothesis with clarity. The methods section must provide sufficient detail to allow independent replication of the study. This includes a precise description of study design, population or sample characteristics, data collection procedures, instruments or technologies used, and statistical methods applied. When applicable, the manuscript must include a clear statement on ethical approval and informed consent procedures in accordance with international research ethics standards. The results section should present the findings in a logical and objective manner, supported by appropriate tables and figures. Authors must avoid interpretation of the results in this section; interpretation belongs in the discussion. The discussion should begin with a succinct summary of the key findings, followed by their interpretation in the context of existing literature. Authors are expected to elaborate on the implications of their work, critically discuss its limitations, and suggest relevant directions for future investigation. The conclusion must succinctly highlight the study’s contribution to the field without repeating prior content. References must be formatted according to Vancouver style. The article processing charge (APC) for original research articles is $180 USD, payable only upon acceptance. Authors from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) or early-career researchers may request partial fee waivers at the time of submission, which are granted at the discretion of the editorial office.Review Articles
Review articles should provide a balanced and critical synthesis of the current knowledge on a clearly defined topic within the scope of biomedical and health sciences. These articles must offer insight into conceptual advances, unresolved debates, or methodological trends relevant to their domain. Authors are encouraged to contextualize the literature and offer reasoned interpretations, rather than merely summarizing published work. Review manuscripts must not exceed 4000 words (excluding references and supplementary materials). The abstract should be unstructured and must not exceed 250 words. It should briefly outline the scope, rationale, and central findings or conclusions of the review. A well-defined introduction should set the conceptual framework, articulate the importance of the topic, and define the article’s boundaries. The body of the review must be organized under clear thematic subheadings to guide the reader logically through the subject matter. Use of visual aids such as tables, conceptual diagrams, and figures is encouraged where they improve clarity or summarize complex data. Authors should strive for comprehensive coverage of relevant literature, while also identifying research gaps, emerging questions, or implications for future studies. The conclusion should summarize the review’s principal messages and, where applicable, suggest areas where new research is most needed. References must be formatted according to the Vancouver citation style. The APC for review articles is $140 USD, payable upon acceptance. Waivers may be requested under the same terms outlined for original articles.Case Reports
Case reports submitted to Sci-Lum should present rare, unusual, or educational clinical scenarios that offer valuable insights into diagnosis, pathophysiology, therapeutic decision-making, or medical ethics. The aim of publishing such reports is to broaden clinical understanding, stimulate the development of new hypotheses, and encourage critical discussion of atypical or instructive cases with broader relevance to practice or education. Manuscripts in this category must adhere to the CARE guidelines and include a completed CARE checklist upon submission. The manuscript should not exceed 2500 words, excluding references, and must be accompanied by a structured abstract of no more than 200 words, divided into Background, Case Summary, and Conclusion. The Background should briefly describe the novelty or relevance of the case; the Case Summary must provide a chronological narrative, covering clinical presentation, diagnostic workup, treatment strategies, and outcomes; while the Conclusion should emphasize the key lessons learned and their significance for clinical practice. The main text should begin with a concise introduction explaining the reason for reporting the case. This should be followed by a detailed, chronological presentation of clinical data and patient course. The discussion should situate the case within the context of existing literature, exploring differential diagnoses, relevant mechanisms, and evidence-based interpretation where applicable. Authors are encouraged to highlight what makes the case illustrative or exceptional, avoiding excessive speculation. In accordance with ethical publishing standards, all patient-identifying information must be fully anonymized, and written informed consent for publication must be obtained from the patient or their legal representative. A formal statement confirming this must be included within the manuscript. A publication fee of $90 USD applies upon acceptance. Waiver requests will be considered under appropriate circumstances.Formatting and Language Requirements
Authors must enter their manuscript content directly into the structured submission form provided on our platform. The form is divided into separate fields. Please do not upload your manuscript as a document file — only supplementary materials should be uploaded as files. Manuscripts must be written in clear, concise, and grammatically correct English. Avoid colloquial expressions; use formal scientific language. Authors whose native language is not English are strongly encouraged to use professional language editing services prior to submission. Sci-Lum offers optional in-house language editing service after acceptance, at no additional charge, to ensure clarity and consistency across published content. Define all abbreviations at first mention, and use SI units wherever applicable. Figures, tables, datasets, multimedia files, and other supplementary material should be uploaded separately in the Supplementary Files section of the submission form. Each supplementary file should be clearly named and referenced appropriately in the main text (e.g., “see Supplementary Figure 1”). All supplementary documents, including figures and tables, should be numbered and titled. These materials should be compiled into a single, clearly organized archive file (e.g., ZIP or RAR), which should then be uploaded to the Supplementary Files section.Citation Style and Referencing Guidelines
All references submitted to Sci-Lum must conform to the Vancouver citation style, which is widely used in biomedical and health science literature. References should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they appear in the text and must be identified by Arabic numerals in superscript, placed after punctuation marks (e.g., “…as previously described.¹”). The reference list must be included at the end of the manuscript and formatted according to the standards set by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). All references must be complete, accurate, and up-to-date. The use of DOI numbers and PubMed IDs is encouraged where available. Research Ethics and Publication Integrity
All research involving human participants, human data, or animals must comply with relevant institutional and international ethical standards, including but not limited to the Declaration of Helsinki, the CIOMS International Ethical Guidelines, and local regulatory frameworks. Manuscripts must clearly indicate that ethical approval was obtained from an appropriate ethics committee or Institutional Review Board (IRB), and include the approval number when applicable. For studies involving human participants, a statement confirming that informed consent was obtained must be included in the manuscript. Identifying patient information must be omitted unless explicit permission for disclosure has been granted. For case reports, authors must obtain written consent from the patient or legal guardian and submit a declaration of consent upon request. In clinical research, trial registration in a publicly accessible database (e.g., ClinicalTrials.gov, WHO ICTRP) is required and must be documented in the Methods section.Plagiarism and Originality Policy
Sci-Lum enforces a strict zero-tolerance policy on plagiarism and academic misconduct. All manuscripts are screened using the iThenticate plagiarism detection system. Submissions with a similarity index exceeding 15%, excluding references and commonly used phrases, may be returned to the authors for revision or rejected outright. Authors must affirm that their work is original, has not been published previously, and is not under consideration elsewhere. Duplicate submissions, data fabrication or falsification, and undisclosed conflicts of interest are grounds for immediate rejection and potential reporting to relevant institutions or funders.DOI Assignment and Licensing
